We live in a world of instant gratification, quick fixes and fast responses. So it isn’t surprising that some companies are trying to take the “work” out of “workouts.” Enter self-toning fitness clothes, the active wear that accelerates muscle toning and efficiently saves us time. It all began with toning shoes, which promote body balance and stability, resulting in tighter butts and leaner legs. Now, companies like Reebok and Fila have launched clothing lines that claim to do the same thing, promising people instant fitness solutions by simply pulling on a t-shirt or pair of pants. So the question remains, do these really work?
The idea behind most toning fitness apparel is to increase muscle activity through resistance and compression. Fila’s line of clothes claims to increase muscle exercise by as much as 50% through the use of active panels of Lycra fabric. The panels compress active muscles, enhancing the sculpting and shaping of a woman’s body. Not only that, but it is said to effectively smooth targeted areas and reduce the appearance of cellulite by promoting blood circulation and oxygenation. Talk about a multitasker.
Reebok EasyTone uses “resistone” bands to create resistance with every movement, whether it’s running on a treadmill, cleaning the house or walking your dog. The clothes are designed to tone and strengthen upper and lower body muscles, improve posture and promote balance. Whether or not this is proven is yet to be seen.
Despite the flashy advertisements promoting the divine capabilities of these self-toning garments, many fitness experts and consumers are skeptical. In fact, the American Council of Exercise said there was no evidence to support the claims that people can achieve more toned and fit bodies by wearing these clothes. Customer reviews have been mixed on the apparel’s toning abilities, but some have claimed that they did have to work harder with it on. Also, most women reported feeling sexy and attractive while wearing the Reebok workout pants, so for a confidence boost alone, they may be worth the money. If you are willing to drop anywhere between $50 and $100 on these clothes, be aware that results may not be instantaneous. Some reports have shown that the clothes will have an affect on your muscles over time, but by no means will you become toned right away.
The bottom line is that nothing can replace the benefits of exercise, and losing those extra bits of fat around your waist or toning up your thighs is going to require more hard work than pulling up a pair of stretchy workout pants. So find a gym or make time for a walk, because maintaining an active lifestyle will ultimately get you the body you want.
