Permanent Hair Removal, What it Means for you

Laser clinics, medical spas, and dermatologists often classify laser hair removal as permanent hair removal. However, the FDA only allows electrolysis to be marketed under permanent hair removal, so what does this mean for laser technology?

Laser hair removal is approved by the FDA for permanent hair reduction. This means that the FDA is unwilling to claim that laser equipment can remove hairs forever. By stating hair reduction the FDA means that laser hair removal is long lasting, with possible permanent effects, yet still allows for the chance of regrowth. With improvement in hair lasers and the skill of most laser technicians most clients actually do not experience any sort of regrowth, however, the possibility does exists.

What laser hair removal offers is up to a 90% reduction of hair. Laser hair removal cannot claim permanency without acknowledging that 10% chance. This is why the FDA would prefer that laser clinics and medspas use the term permanent hair reduction over permanent hair removal. However, laser hair removal’s 90% reduction rate is on par with that of electrolysis. The newer laser technology faces a much stiffer FDA review process than electrolysis did, and lasers could very well be more efficient. It’s just under the FDA’s newer standards, they are unwilling to label laser hair removal what they labeled electrolysis years ago.

Laser epilation offers efficiency and control anywhere on the body: from the back to the face to the bikini line. While, technically laser treatments may not be deemed permanent hair removal, it's as long lasting as hair removal can be. Nothing on the market today offers better results than laser hair removal.
