Home Improvement Showdown: A Blog Begins

Hello there, friends and future friends! As you can see, SignatureForum has indeed started a blog of their very own, and just like any quality home improvement project, a new blog requires its fair share of dedication, expertise, and good old fashioned originality. That's what I hope to bring to the table as your home remodeling blogger extraordinare here at SignatureForum.

If you've stumbled upon some of the blogosphere's other offerings in this field, you probably have some preconceived notions of what kind of things you might find here: namely, long-winded DIY how-to guides and unnecessary anecdotes about my children and/or pets.

Let's get this thing started!

Well, let's bury these rumors straight away, because the last thing I'm interested in is covering the same bases as every other home improvement blog out there.

Don't get me wrong, there's going to be a lot of in-depth, helpful information provided here, including the proverbial kitchen sink. But SignatureForum already features a ton of background information on different types of contracting projects and what they entail. This blog is more about the decision making process; weighing your options and making those tough calls. It doesn't matter if we're comparing types of shower stalls, cabinets, paints, or refrigerators, my goal is to present you with two possibilities, head to head, with the maximum detail, insight, and feedback necessary for you to form your own educated opinion.

I've spent the better part of a decade dealing with home improvement from every angle: as a homeowner, contracting professional, and most recently, as a consumer advocate. I'm looking forward to sharing my experience with you, and even more so, I'm looking forward to hearing from you. So let's get this thing started!

Mr. Logan, I want to remodel my bathroom and my kitchen. Everyone keeps saying that the first thing I should pick out is my flooring. Is this true?

Re: Flooring

Excellent question there, Britney. I don't mean to echo all your friends, but indeed, choosing your flooring is a mighty fine way to start a bathroom or kitchen remodeling job. Start from the ground up, as they say. Of course, if there's a certain type of countertop you've had in mind as a focal point for your remodel, then by all means, start with a countertop. The main advantage of choosing the flooring first is that it directly impacts color and style choices for pretty much everything else in the kitchen or bathroom (since the floor tends to be the room's widest space consumer and intersects with various counters and appliances). Good luck on your projects, and please keep us updated!
