Gas Furance vs Space Heaters

Home Heating Comparisons Tournament

Round 1: Gas Furnace vs Space Heaters

To recap my previous blog, I've decided to address the great debate about optimal home heating choices by throwing some of the leading heating systems into a head-to-head, comparison-based tournament. Eight heating methods will enter, only one will win! Of course, the fact is, any of these heating systems can have their benefits, depending on the interests of the homeowner and layout of the home. But as the central source of heat in your house, some systems simply get the job done better than others. Today, we have a first round match between the #1 seed, Gas Furnace, and the underdog #8 seed, Space Heaters.

Gas Furnace Space Heaters

Gas Furance
Represented by all-stars like the Natural Gas Furnace and Propane Furnace, the Gas Furnace team has a long track record for highly effective, total house heating. As a fuel burning system, gas furnaces require very careful installation and consistent maintenance to insure safety protocols and to limit the release of pollutants. For most homes, Gas Furnace costs will usually be cheaper than comparable electric heating costs during the winter, and a Gas Furnace will always be more cost effective and much easier to manage than a fleet of separate Space Heaters.

Space Heaters
Most of the time, Space Heaters work in tandem with gas furnaces or other types of heating systems, as complementary devices for focused room heating. In the past, some gas and kerosene space heaters were considered common fire and carbon monoxide risks, but today's best electric space heaters have special safety features that also make them much more reliable and effective. In fact, modern space heaters work so well, that some people use them in place of a traditional furnace or heat pump. However, for any average sized home, the cost of using multiple electric space heaters will surpass that of even the heftiest gas bill. Space Heaters' limitations still make them best suited to complementary heating, meaning they are no match for the trusty Gas Furnace.

And the winner is. . .
Gas Furnace! No upsets here. Space Heaters are NOT a substitute for a quality furnace of any kind. So, Gas Furnace advances to meet the winner of Oil Furnace vs Wood/Coal Furnace.
