Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Description:

Time Required:
The surgery generally lasts 1-3 hours.

In/Out Patient:
Outpatient.

Side Effects:
Swelling, bleeding, and bruising in the treated areas is normal and usually abates within a few days of the surgery.

Risks:
All surgeries carry the risk of infection or an adverse reaction to anesthetic. Blepharoplasty specifically runs the risk of loss of control of the eyelids (temporarily) or damage to the eyeball and surrounding muscle.

Duration of Results:
Results are long lasting, usually 5-10 years and even permanent.

Recovery Time:
The sutures are usually removed in 4-6 days following the surgery, with bandages being necessary for another week. The bruising and swelling should all be gone within 1-2 weeks.

Insurance:
If Blepharoplasty is being pursued to correct vision, insurance may cover it, otherwise it is not.

Level of Discomfort:
The discomfort associated with Blepharoplasty, is the same as that experienced during most surgical procedures. An anesthetic will be used to lessen the pain.

Anesthesia:
Generally local anesthetic with sedation is used, but general anesthesia may be required.
