Gynecomastia

Description:
Gynecomastia refers to oversized male breasts. This can be caused by a variety of factors including obesity and hormonal imbalances. Excess fat, breast and glandular tissue accumulate; taking away the masculine contours of the chest and replacing it with flab.

The Procedure:
Gynecomastia can be difficult to treat because weight loss and exercise do not necessarily remove the breast tissue since not all of it is fat. Thankfully, male breast reduction can remove the breasts and return the look of a masculine, defined chest. The excess fat and tissue is removed though surgery allowing the patient to get back his self-confidence.

Time Required:
Gynecomastia usually takes 1-2 hours but this may vary based on the individual situation.

In/Out Patient:
Outpatient.

Side Effects:
Gynecomastia side effects may include temporary, swelling, numbness and bruising.

Risks:
All surgeries carry with them some risks. The risks specific to Gynecomastia include: pigmentation change, breast asymmetry, loss of sensation in the breast and permanent scarring.

Duration of Results:
The results of Gynecomastia are permanent but changes in weight may reduce the benefits.

Recovery Time:
Some patients can return to work 1-2 days after the surgery but a week is more typical. Strenuous activity should be avoided for up to a month.

Insurance:
Due to the cosmetic nature of Gynecomastia, it is not usually covered. There are some exceptions however.

Level of Discomfort:
The pain associated with Gynecomastia s mild and can be dealt with through over-the-counter pain medications.

Anesthesia:
Gynecomastia is usually performed under general anesthesia.
