For permanently fuller, younger-looking lips, many patients are choosing lip implants. Where lip fillers will only plump the lips for a period of around 6 months, lip implants can produce permanent lip augmentation results.

Current lip implant choices include AlloDerm®, SoftForm, GORE-TEX®, Ultrasoft and PermaLip Implants. AlloDerm, which uses natural human collagen as opposed to silicone or synthetic polymers, is the only implant that becomes reabsorbed into skin tissue within 6-12 months.

Time Required:
The length of the procedure varies by patient and case, but 30-60 minutes is common.

In/Out Patient:
Outpatient.

Side Effects:
Side effects from lip implants may include temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, discomfort, tightness, infection, and tissue-ingrowth or problematic scar tissue.

Duration of Lip Implant Results:
With the exception of AlloDerm implants, lip implants are permanent.

Recovery Time:
Patients are allowed to go home immediately following surgery. Sutures may stay in for up to 5-7 days. Patients should refrain from strenuous activities for up to three weeks post surgery.

Insurance:
Due to the cosmetic nature of Lip Implants, they typically aren't covered by insurance.

Level of Discomfort:
Many patients experience discomfort immediately following lip implant surgery, but Arnica, Bromelain or another pain medication is often prescribed to combat any pain.

Anesthesia:
Local or general anesthesia is used during lip implant surgery.
