Nipple Augmentation

Description:
Nipple Augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that can correct misshapened nipples, and is especially associated with the condition of inverted nipples.  Nipple Augmentation surgery can be separated into two categories: Nipple Correction and Nipple Reconstruction.

Nipple Reconstruction is intended for women who have had a mastectomy or lumpectomy.  This type of nipple surgery is usually performed during a breast reconstruction surgery.  In this case, the nipple is not augmented, but created from a flap of skin.

Nipple correction is performed in order to correct a condition known as inverted nipple. This is the most common form of nipple augmentation performed by plastic surgeons.  The condition of inverted nipples causes the nipple to point inward instead of outward, this can cause embarrassment due to how they look and can also interfere with breast-feeding. The procedure can also be sued to correct puffy, oversized nipple. The surgeon will remove and alter the nipple tissue, creating a normal healthy looking nipple.

Nipple Augmentation surgery typically takes 1-2 hours to perform.

Side Effects:
The side effects associated with Nipple Augmentation include temporary, redness, swelling and pain.

Risks:
All surgeries carry with them some risks even Nipple Augmentation. The dangers specific to Nipple Augmentation surgery include: loss of breast-feeding ability, obvious scarring, and loss of nipple sensitivity.

Duration of Results:
Nipple Augmentation is permanent in most cases.

Recovery Time:
Most patients are able to return to work one or two days after the surgery. It takes 1-2 months to fully recover from Nipple Augmentation.

Insurance:
Because of the cosmetic nature of nipple augmentation, it is not usually covered by insurance.

Level of Discomfort:
There is a moderate level of pain associated with the procedure; it can be dealt with through oral painkillers.

Anesthesia:
Local anesthesia with sedation is usual for Nipple Augmentations.
