Sculptra™ is slightly different from other dermal fillers and collagen injections, which typically only add volume. Sculptra is a synthetic polymer of polylactic acid (PLA), that, when injected deep into the layers of skin, induces the formation of collagen. Sculptra is usually completely reabsorbed within several weeks. However, the newly formed collagen should last much longer. This is also very different from standard injectable collagen; regular collagen shots are derived from bovine tissue, which can cause allergic reactions, human tissue or synthetically. Additionally, standard collagen injections are often absorbed completely within 4-6 months. The new collagen formed by Sculptra has been shown to be present after 5 years of initial treatment. Sculptra is commonly used to treat sunken cheeks, indentations, lipoatrophy (loss of facial fat), and hollow eyes for a more youthful appearance.
