Varicose veins are discolored veins that appear just below the surface of the skin. Like spider veins, varicose veins are no longer functioning in the body and can be removed safely. Varicose veins mostly differ from spider veins in their appearance; varicose veins tend to be larger, bluer in color, and often slightly protrude from the skin. Varicose veins are usually just a cosmetic problem, but in some cases they can lead to swelling, pain and itching. Varicose veins are commonly treated with Laser Vein Removal, Sclerotherapy, or Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT).

Most cases of varicose veins can be treated with Sclerotherapy, Laser Vein Treatment, or both. Sclerotherapy consists of injecting a solution into the vein that destroys it. Laser Vein Treatment burns the vein allowing it to be absorbed into the body through the natural healing process.
More severe cases of varicose veins may require surgery for treatment, either Surgical Ligation and Stripping or Ambulatory Phlebectomy. Surgical Ligation and stripping consists of plugging up the vein to stop blood flow and then surgically removing it. Ambulatory Phlebectomy consists of locating the vein with a specially designed light. Tiny incisions are than made around the vein removing it. This method has the advantage of leaving the smallest scars.
Sclerotherapy and Laser Vein treatments usually take 30 - 60 minutes with 2-8 treatment sessions being the norm. Surgical removal takes longer and varies based on the number of veins treated.
All of these procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
The side effects differ based on which treatment option is pursued. The most common side effects are swelling, redness and bruising; all of which usually subside in a few days. See what real patients had to report, on the vein treatment procedure pages' ratings and reviews sections.
The non-surgical treatment options have very few risks associated with them. Surgical varicose vein removal is also fairly safe but like all surgeries, it carries certain risks, such as reaction to the anesthetic scarring or discoloration in the treated area.
Duration of Results:
All treatment results in the permanent destruction of the veins in the treated area; however, occasionally new veins will appear requiring further treatment.
Non-surgical varicose vein removal has the advantage of requiring no "down time," most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately following treatment. Surgical vein removal usually requires about 1-2 weeks for recovery.
Generally, Varicose Vein Removal is considered a cosmetic procedure not covered by insurance although certain cases may qualify for coverage.
Level of Discomfort:
The level of discomfort varies based o the procedure, whoever most people report only mild pain as a result of their treatment.
For non-surgical treatments, anesthesia is not required, although some patients choose to use a topical anesthetic. For surgical removal local or general anesthesia may be necessary.
