Self-Performed Plastic Surgery!?

The idea of self-performed plastic surgery makes me cringe. It doesn't take much thought to figure out why this is a terrible idea; contamination, infection, imprecise applications, the list goes on and on. Recently a few stories have surfaced about people purchasing products online and performing plastic surgery on themselves; the results have been dangerous and devastating.

The most recent story is about Mary, a 54 year old woman with a public career who sought to plump her lips and fill a facial scar. Mary had visited a plastic surgeon for this procedure once before. She loved the results and thought of it as a simple and relatively painless procedure. After briefly searching the internet, she purchased silicone for only ten dollars and set off to perform the procedure on her own.

Instead of using medical-grade silicone, Mary injected her face with personal lubricant. Her failed attempt to save money, resulted in a massive infection, painful swelling and unattractive scaring. Instead of saving a few dollars, Mary now has the enormous expense of having it removed and will require some reconstruction to repair the damage she has caused.

Nobody should jeopardize their health by attempting a self performed surgical procedure. If you're interested in plastic surgery but concerned about cost, take the time to talk to a plastic surgeon; many have payment plans available, or are willing to offer discounted services for first time patients or referrals.

And the Cosmetic Surgery Oscar Goes to...

Once again, it's almost time for the annual Academy Awards! I think of it as that magical event that brings movie buffs and pop culture lovers together again to celebrate Hollywood's talent, love of fashion, and of course, its unbelievable (or perhaps believable) physical flawlessness. Some of the top nominees for the 81st Academy Awards showcase, not only some of the best acting chops in the business, but also some impressive feats of cosmetic enhancement. [More]

Best Celebrity Lips

Well, dear-hearts, I've been feeling a tad guilty about how I came down on the lovely Lisa Rinna in the last blog. While I stand by her assertion that she went a little filler-happy in the cheekbone region, I think her juicy pucker is to die for. So, in that line, I decided to write a little ode to lip augmentation, and list some of my personal favorite pairs of celebrity lips!

Hello, my darlings. Hope the new year is off to a good start for you! Just thought I'd pop in after reading the latest Lisa Rinna admission about some regrettable plastic surgery choices she's made. Now, this soap opera starlet has been known for her pillowy lips and enhanced bosoms for many years now; but recently, some gossip mags and now Rinna herself have claimed she's taken plastic surgery too far.

It's a brand new year, my darlings! That means new possibilities, fresh starts and new outlooks for all. When it comes to those uplifting and simultaneously dreaded New Year's resolutions, people's goals for the new year can range from breaking through personal fitness barriers, to working on organizational skills, to trying to swear less in mixed company, to yes, physical and cosmetic enhancement. Thus, a new year is a new opportunity to tackle pesky weight issues, treat skin problems, and examine the many options in unwanted hair removal.

Oprah's 200lb. Confession: Can Cosmetic Enhancement Help?

Hello, my dears. It has been quite a while, I apologize. A lot has happened in recent months, but today I want to talk about Oprah. Oh, Oprah. I'm sure you can identify with my feelings of sadness and empathy upon hearing Oprah Winfrey's recent weight gain confession. How difficult to hear such a dynamic, inspirational, and incredible woman express her embarrassment and shame over ongoing weight problems. Let's not lie to ourselves; that's a shame many of us know, have at one time endured, or at least been wary of. In the latest issue of "O" Magazine, Oprah, easily the most successful and admired woman in America, admitted she has once more lost the fight against weight gain and currently weighs a disappointing 200 lbs. But not to worry kids, Oprah has a plan.

Don't Suck it in, Tummy Tuck it in: Alpha Moms Go From Flab to Fab!

In today's society, does anybody shoulder more responsibilities than the working mother? I'm going to have to bite "no" on that one. Granted, I've never done the mom thing myself, but based on feedback gathered during countless venting sessions over coffee, late-night phone calls, and retail therapy with female friends and relatives, I have nothing but respect and admiration for these modern-day heroines. Successful working moms, or "alpha moms" as they're sometimes called, bust their butts to do it all, and as a result, they often overlook their own upkeep and self-preservation. But thanks to cosmetic treatments like liposuction, breast augmentation, and tummy tucks, working moms can keep doing it all and keep up their formerly rockin' bodies.

Too Young for BOTOX®?

So I recently heard the accusations against Sharon Stone for wanting to give Botox to her 8-year-old son. It was supposedly to prevent foot odor, not to tighten up baby fat, but even so, the idea of Botox for an 8-year-old leaves many of us going, "Whaa...?" So it got me thinking, how young is too young for Botox, or for cosmetic procedures in general?

Greetings, my lovelies! It seems that every Fall, with the debuts of addictive reality shows like Top Model and the Biggest Loser, my consequent couch-separation anxiety and lagging social life begin to make me feel a tad loserish myself. But all self-consciousness aside, while watching Biggest Loser's season opener, I got to thinking: How many of us, myself included, who are close to or at our ideal weight, still have stubborn inches, cellulite, and fat that just won't go away!

For months and months, we've all heard about home laser hair removal. Some of us, could barely contain ourselves (myself... I'll honestly say I was very curious to say the least). This kind of laser technology has been on the market for years in Europe, the most popular being the Rio and Epila lasers. These products were never FDA approved, but I know quite a few people who got their hands on Rio hair removal lasers through sites like eBay. I always think shirking the FDA is a dangerous decision, but if you want something bad enough (i.e. smooth, hairless skin), you have to do what you have to do.
