Cy-Yo and YogaFit: A New Spin on Mind-Body Fitness

A total workout experience now includes the mind as well as the body. That's why yoga classes and Tai-chi classes have taken off over the past few years. These are what are called mind-body movement exercise, designed more for relaxation than caloric burn.

The Health Club Trends are Health Club Combos

The latest fitness trend and, of course, the next logical step is to create a workout that maximizes the mind and maximizes the body. The answer: combine mind-body movement with aerobic activity. It's like if peanut butter is great and chocolate is great then why not combine them (and ps... if I didn't eat peanut butter cups I probably wouldn't have to be at the gym so much!). The newest exercise trends now include Cy-Yo and YogaFit.

Cy-Yo: Cy-Yo is a combination of yoga and cycling. Just as Spinning wished to emulate the intensive outdoor biking experience in a class setting, Cy-Yo recreates a more holistic cardio workout. Classes consist of a 10-minute yoga warm-up, 40 minutes on a stationary bike, and a 10-minute yoga cool down. Unlike Spinning, the cycling aspect focuses on energy centers, visualization techniques, and breathing patterns.

YogaFit: YogaFit combines Yoga with strength training and core muscle building exercises. YogaFit eliminates many of the more spiritual aspects of yoga to create a seamless flow between yoga positions and fitness exercises such as pushups, sit-ups, and squats.

Yoga Combinations Offer Flexibility in More Ways than One

By combining yoga and aerobic exercises you end up with a versatile workout that is as good at toning muscles and shaping abs as it is at helping the body recover from strenuous injuries. With health clubs always looking for the next big thing in fitness, look for more yoga combinations in the future: yoga boot camps, yoga wall climb, or yoga yoga.
