We all know the cliches about clean slates and lofty goals this time of year, but when push comes to shove, following through on your New Year’s resolutions requires a lot more than a desire to better yourself. For real results, you need a plan, some perks, and a group of people ready to keep you moving every step of the way. This is particularly true when your resolutions involve losing weight and getting in shape. No matter how dedicated you are to your goals, even the strongest willed individuals can have their efforts derailed by daily responsibilities, time constraints, and the discouraging effects of a long, grey winter.

If this sounds like you, you have nothing to be ashamed of. However, if you want 2008 to be the year you truly turn things around, we’ve provided five simple suggestions in this month’s newsletter that just might help you get over the hump and make your resolution a reality.

Join a Health Club with a Friend or Spouse

The first part of this step is obvious. By signing up with a local gym or health club in your area, you're providing yourself with an endless array of avenues for getting in shape, from treadmills and stationary bikes to muscle resistance exercises, swimming, running, aerobic classes, and even competitive sports like basketball and racquetball. Meanwhile, by joining with a friend, you are increasing your level of commitment (nobody likes to bail on a friend), and insuring that you'll always have a trusted ally there to motivate you. Plus, if your friend or spouse has similar aspirations of weight loss or muscle building, a little friendly competition never hurts!


Get Involved in Classes

For one thing, health club classes are a great way to learn about the methodology and techniques of various proven fitness methods, including Tai Chi, Pilates, weight training, aerobic workouts, and dozens more. Perhaps even more importantly, however, a class atmosphere can help you establish a sense of community with fellow club members and a connection with your teacher, both of which can be excellent motivating factors in bringing you back to the gym week after week.

Go Shopping!

You know that rush of joy and adrenaline you can get from buying a new outfit or a great pair of shoes? Well, it makes perfect sense to be a dedicated follower of fitness, as well as fashion! No matter what styles you’re into, there are gym clothes out there that will speak to your sensibilities. So add a dash of fun to your workout regimen, and pick out clothes you’ll be comfortable in, and pleased to be seen in. It may seem like a small detail, but surprisingly enough, many people cite a lack of suitable workout clothes as a contributing reason for not going to the gym as often as they’d like.


Hire a Personal Trainer

If you want to leave nothing to chance, your best bet might be to hire a reputable personal trainer. It’s a personal trainer’s job to keep you focused, and to set up training and eating patterns that will work with your schedule without sacrificing results. For many people, a weekly meeting with a personal trainer might be sufficient. But if you’ve really got your eyes on the prize, there are personal trainers available to work with you on a day to day basis, making sure you’re doing everything you need to do to get in shape.

Tell Your Friends, Family, and Co-workers About
Your New Commitment

No man, or woman, is an island. It can be extremely difficult to stick to your physical fitness goals when the only voice motivating you is the one inside your own head. As we all know, that same voice can also offer up thoughts of doubt, discouragement, and brownie sundaes. The best solution then is to have a chorus of voices cheering you on, and thankfully, most people are more than willing to help and encourage a friend in need. Feel free to share your New Year’s resolutions with the people in your life, and keep them up to date on your progress. You might be pleased to find that they’ll not only be there to applaud your successes, but to get you back on track when you’ve lost your sense of direction.
