Laser Hair Removal: Finding a Price that's Right for You

Welcome back to SignatureForum's Laser Hair Removal newsletter. The field of Laser Hair Removal is constantly growing and we can help keep you up-to-date on the latest trends and news. Last month, we took a look at who is a candidate for laser hair removal treatments, and this month we're going to discuss Laser Hair Removal pricing.

Laser Hair Removal costs can vary greatly depending on a number of factors. First and foremost, the cost of laser hair removal will be greatly affected by the area of the body you wish to treat. Removing back hair, for example, will simply cost more than removing chin hair. Facial hair removal, including the chin or upper lip, can cost anywhere from $50 to $150 per treatment, with an entire face costing as much as $300 per treatment. Removing back hair, however, can cost between $200 and $500 per treatment. You should expect to need 4 to 6 treatments with a Laser Hair Removal package, costing anywhere from $400 to $3000, ranging from the smallest areas, to the largest. That's a big gap between laser prices, and this can also be due to the individual laser clinic or medspa and their idea of a “fair” price, along with how much they pay their technicians, and their level of training.

Determining the Price of Laser Hair Removal

Unfortunately, Laser Hair Removal costs are not universal. Every place is different, but laser clinics and medical spas basically offer three different ways to charge for Laser Hair Removal: flat fee, by the minute, or per pulse.

Laser Hair Removal by Flat Fee

Some skin care clinics offer Laser Hair Removal prices at a fixed flat fee. The clinic breaks their laser treatments down into body areas (i.e. underarms or chest) and charges everyone a predetermined rate for each area. This could mean all bikini line hair removal is $100 or all chest hair removal is $300. Individual hair growth does not enter into the equation. This can be a problem because not all backs are created equal. If the laser center charges $500 for back hair laser removal across the board, but your back is only moderately hairy, you could potentially be spending more money than is necessary.

Laser Hair Removal by Time

Some laser clinics and medspas charge Laser Hair Removal in increments of time; this makes it possible to purchase treatments by 15-minute intervals. For example, if the Laser Hair Removal specialist charges $100 per 15-minutes and the treatment takes 45 minutes then the cost would be $300. This could be a very good option for treating smaller body areas. Of course, the amount of hair, the skill of the laser technician, and the speed of the Laser Hair Removal machine will determine the total cost of your hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal by the Pulse

Every time a laser is actually fired is called a pulse. In this set up, Laser Hair Removal prices are based on the number of pulses it takes to complete an area. A singe pulse typically covers an area roughly the size of a nickel and can remove about a hundred hairs. The laser clinic would most likely offer a treatment package that costs $150 for 150 pulses, and charge an additional dollar for every additional pulse needed.

Tips for Saving on Laser Hair Removal Costs

No matter what kind of laser clinic or medspa you chose, what lasers they offer, or how they charge for their Laser Hair Removal, there are a few tips to help keep those costs down:

  • See if they have any special offers. Most skin care clinics have various monthly specials and all you have to do is ask.
  • See if they offer a discount for paying for a complete treatment package upfront.
  • Ask if the clinic has a refer a friend program. The more the merrier—bring a friend, get a discount.

Although, the most important thing to remember about Laser Hair Removal costs is that lasers represents permanent hair removal. In the long run, waxing or shaving is going to cost much more than any Laser Hair Removal treatment.
