Not Making the Cut: The Benefits of Non-Surgical Facelifts

Welcome to another addition of the SignatureForum Skin Care newsletter. Winter is almost over—the harshest season on our skin—so now is the best time to start thinking about getting our skin rejuvenated in time for warmer weather. After all, Spring is about renewal and there's no better way to start that process than with your skin. This month, SignatureForum looks at non-surgical facelifts and skin tightening. Many people think that plastic surgery is the only answer, but if you're not ready to go under the knife there are many non-invasive anti-aging treatments available. However, finding the right non-surgical facelift for you depends primarily on the kind of results you're looking for.

The different options with non-surgical facelifts depend on whether you're looking to tighten up fine lines and minor wrinkles, or if you're in search of a treatment more akin to a full facelift.

For Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles on the face are the most common signs of aging, and as most of us know, you don't need to be a grandparent to get them either. Sun damage, smoking, and even stress can lead to premature fine lines. These can consist of laugh lines, crow's feet, or worry lines on the forehead. For those in their 30's or 40's, these fine lines and minor wrinkles can become a real nuisance; however, there are specific aesthetic treatments that are best suited for smaller wrinkles. Light-based treatments like IPL or Laser Skin Rejuvenation are the best fixes for small or fine wrinkles. These treatments are less intense and generally less expensive as well.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation—Laser Skin Rejuvenation and Laser Skin Resurfacing can both be used as non-surgical facelifts to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. The difference between these two laser facelifts is the amount of power utilized. A skin resurfacing treatment is much more abrasive, you should expect significant redness and facial peeling after a Laser Skin Resurfacing. However, skin resurfacing is also more effective. Laser treatments are changing, though, with the introduction of Fraxel®. Fraxel® is a Fractional Laser Resurfacing treatment that offers the effectiveness of Laser Skin Resurfacing, but with the limited downtime and smooth transition of Laser Skin Rejuvenation.

IPL Photofacial—This light-based facelift uses intense pulsed light to enhance the skin. Pulses of light warm your skin's natural collagen, which stimulates collagen growth and eliminates fine lines and wrinkles. IPL treatments are probably the least effective form of non-surgical facelifts. They're also the safest and most inexpensive, as well. For anyone 30 or under who is struggling with minor wrinkles, an IPL Photofacial treatment is probably the best place to start.

Solutions for Deeper Wrinkles and Loose Skin

Wrinkles and sagging skin are caused by a decrease in collagen production. Collagen is what keeps our skin smooth, tight, and elastic. As we get older we produce less and less natural collagen. IPL and laser rejuvenation treatments can restore the collagen to some degree, but newer, more advanced treatments are much more focused when it comes to this. Skin care treatments like Thermage® and Titan™ are changing the way we treat sagging skin on the face.

Thermage®—Thermage® is the treatment most associated with the term "non-surgical facelift." It's also commonly referred to as the "lunch hour facelift." Thermage® isn't a laser treatment. Instead, Thermage® uses powerful radio frequencies to restore collagen flow. Over time, this new collagen will help tighten skin and smooth wrinkles around the chin, neck, jaw, or eyes. Since, Thermage® is stronger than IPL or laser resurfacing, it requires fewer treatments to see and maintain results. Thermage® is a great non-invasive option for those dealing with deeper wrinkles and facial creases.

Titan™ Skin Tightening—Titan™ is marketed toward tightening skin…especially around the jaw line and under the chin. This laser facial procedure uses infrared energy to heat and stimulate your body's collagen. While not as powerful as Thermage®, Titan™ offers a more even dispersal of energy—great for the precision work necessary for a non-surgical facelift.
